Mikaela Shiffrin couldn’t have asked for a better end to 2023. The two-time Olympic gold medalist wrapped up the year with two wins during the Alpine Ski World Cup in Lienz, Austria to seal her 93rd World Cup win. Winning the two slaloms in a span of two days with such a margin isn’t something common in the sport. However, while Shiffrin is currently the global leader in terms of World Cup wins, this might not be her biggest moment still from the year.

In March this year, Shiffrin overtook the record of legendary Alpine skier Ingemar Stenmark to etch her name in history. Stenmark held the record for most skiing World Cup wins before Shiffrin edged past the tally in Are. Her 87th World Cup win sealed her position as the most successful Alpine skier of all time. As the world marvels at Shiffrin’s year-end exploits, another old video has surfaced that displays her history-making moment in all its glory.

Mikaela Shiffrin set the benchmark for others to follow

While many fans find themselves curious to know about Shiffrin’s favorite spot to enjoy some thrilling ski time, the icon herself probably has a personal answer to that for herself. A video clip posted by Eurosport on X (previously Twitter) shows Mikaela’s impeccable run as she ended the race six-tenth seconds ahead of second place Wendy Holdner.

Her sixth slalom win of the season was so great that even the commentators failed to contain their awe. “Just watch and admire the majesty of Mikaela Shiffrin“, states the commentator in an exasperated tone as he seemed to be in denial of what was going on before his eyes. Shiffrin didn’t put a foot wrong and while she could afford a mistake on her way to winning the race, the seven-time World Championships winner seemed determined to make it a perfect run instead.

Even the commentator had to acknowledge that this was some of the best skiing he had ever seen and Mikaela looked evidently moved by her achievement after crossing the finishing line.

Shiffrin’s result from March also marked her 53rd career win in the discipline. While she did achieve a major milestone in Are, her exploits this week once again highlighted her claim to be considered among the elites of all time. “Today was a very special day for me“, said Shiffrin after her win on Friday.

The 28-year-old gained an advantage after the first run and made the most of the opportunity during the second go. This is the second consecutive time that Shiffrin won both races in the period between Christmas and New Year. As it stands, Mikaela Shiffrin is the “GREATEST ski racer of all time”.
