For Mikaela Shiffrin, knowing how the view is from the top isn’t something new. The iconic alpine skier made history last year by overtaking Ingemer Stenmark’s World Cup win record. And now, she is looking to create a legacy that will remain unmatched for at least some time. While her place on the top is sealed for the moment, she’s certainly not alone in the solitary pastures.

Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek became the world’s No. 1 in April 2022, and so far doesn’t have plans to leave her spot. Swiatek continues to dominate her opponents on the court and recently entered an elite league, among whose members are the likes of Steffi Graf and Martina Hingis. Her achievement has sent out ripples across the sports world and Shiffrin has a chance to bask in her friend’s glory.

In a recent post on X, formerly Twitter, Shiffrin shared the news of Swiatek winning her 100th match as the world’s top tennis player. The achievement is rare and only a handful of the best have ever managed to attain. Her latest feat has bestowed Swiatek with the honor of being among the ranks of Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, and Serena Williams. To mark the occasion, the two-time Olympic gold medalist Shiffrin shared a boastful post.

Accompanying two muscle-flexing emojis, the post doesn’t make it difficult to understand how proud and happy Shiffrin feels right now. The original post by Eurosport captions their post as “Iga Swiatek joins an exclusive club“, and Mikaela Shiffrin isn’t shy to take a step down for her friend.

While the feat is incredibly rare, Swiatek is making it look easy. She blitzed into 2023 with her current ranking and decimated all her foes. While she didn’t win Wimbledon last year, her other wins will be more than enough to compensate for the upset loss. For Shiffrin, being the best also has to do with support from the nearest people.

One take at a time

Growing up, I didn’t really have an interest in Olympic sports, but it was always something intriguing. As I found the means and the opportunity to explore its world, I found sports like volleyball, and track & field to be something that had tons to offer instead of just scoring through kills and sprinting toward the finish line. Whether it is Nebraska Huskers dominating the court or Noah Lyles maintaining his winning spree on the tracks, these two sports never fail to serve adrenaline rush to their spectators.
