“I’m Scared”: Snowboarding Queen Chloe Kim Makes a Heartbreaking Confession on Exposure to Social Media Judgements

Social media platforms have incorporated themselves into the life of almost everyone. Additionally, recent times have seen a boost in social media personalities and influencers. However, ascertaining people’s notion of appropriate posts on social media handles can be difficult. Like most people, Chloe Kim, too, faces a similar predicament when posting online.

Kim successfully defended her champion title during the Beijing Winter Olympics, making her way into two-peat status. Additionally, she has also won two World Championships, making her one of the most accomplished individuals in snowboarding history.

The predicament of Kim while posting online

In a recent interview, Chloe opened up about this subject. In it, the two-time Olympic gold medalist has emphasized how there are certain expectations from her, even on the things she posts online.

Kim has garnered quite the fan following on social media, with nearly a million followers on Instagram and over 272K on Twitter. However, when one becomes a social figure, people expect certain things from them. And with this comes the conundrum of what to post on social media handles.

Kim addressed this topic during the interview. She said it becomes a challenge for her while posting on her social media accounts due to this reason.

Opening up about the daily challenges she faces after becoming a celebrated figure, Chloe said, “The biggest pressure in my life is being this perfect role model.”

Elucidating the matter, Kim added, “I’m scared to post pictures on social media because I’m like, ‘Oh is this the wrong thing to post? Is this gonna make people think that I’m crazy or that I’m not a good role model to kids? That I’m not PG?”

Why does Chloe Kim face this struggle?

It is because cultures sometimes overlap and what one culture deems appropriate may not be considered suitable by another. And even within a community, there may be differences in customs that could amount to a post being considered inappropriate.

It is a situation that most people have had to face at some point. However, the gravity of the matter increases manifold when the person in question is a celebrity, an Olympian at that.
