2x Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim is taking a break from competitions in the upcoming 2023 season. For all her fans hoping to see her continue her winning streak and dominate the snowboarding world again, this would come as disappointing news. Yet, they would likely not lose heart since Kim has walked this road before.
In 2018 Kim became the youngest woman to win a gold at the Olympics in the halfpipe snowboarding event, at just 17 years old. At that time, enrolled at Princeton University, Kim took a 2 year long break from the sport she had loved since she was 4, to focus on life and academics. Now, in 2023, she hopes that this respite will prove rewarding in the upcoming Olympic games.

The star has had a packed year with one competition after the other. Taking time off will allow Kim to focus on herself and her well-being. In an Interview with Cheddar News, she said, “I just want to enjoy this moment, take it all in and then back to it when I’m feeling ready, but as of now the plan is most definitely to go after a third medal.” She has attributed her need for the break to her mental state. She explained in the same interview to Cheddar News, saying, “I think that a lot of the pressure I feel is mostly from myself and pressure that I put on myself as a professional athlete.”
Choe will be concentrating on improving her skills and training harder. The snowboarding champ wants to win her third Olympic gold medal and make her country proud. She also said this break would help get her mind on track before the competition. The superstar athlete has always dedicated her wins to her fans and all those people who support her. The athlete showed her gratitude for the support in an interview with Olympics.com, saying, “I really think if it weren’t for everyone supporting me, I wouldn’t be here with another gold medal.”
