It was a debut-filled affair for the USWNT. Having successfully kicked off their 2025 campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win in their SheBelieves Cup opener against Colombia, the American ladies struck lightning more than once. However, the moment currently stealing the spotlight involves Becky Sauerbrunn. The wonder woman received unexpected guests who interrupted her during the TNT broadcasting debut.

Gone are those days when the iconic defender herself used to play in these exhibition matches for Team USA. Ever since Sauerbrunn announced her retirement from the beautiful game, she has found broadcast journalism, a new venture for herself to pursue. Warner Bros. now owns TNT Sports, a prominent sports channel based in the UK and Ireland. Moreover, Discovery and BT Group gave Becky Sauerbrunn a job as a studio analyst for the ongoing SheBelieves Cup.

The former Portland Thorns star joins ex-USWNT stars Shannon Box and Julie Foudy and renowned sports broadcaster Sara Walsh at the desk. Naturally, Becky was doing her job during the ongoing game at Houston, Texas-based Shell Energy stadium. The analyst was standing near the sidelines of the pitch, talking to the camera with a mic in her hand.

As Sauerbrunn kept reporting, her former national teammates Sam Coffey and Lynn Biyendolo (formerly Williams interrupted her). Becky had already noticed the two after she turned but Sam and Lynn seemed more excited. They bolted on her and hugged her. The new TNT Sports analyst enjoyed the moment, even as she tried to steady herself from the sudden embrace. Great professional on debut, one must say.

Of course, it’s not like Coffey and Biyendolo weren’t aware that Becky was rolling live; they were, but they simply didn’t care. After all, their former locker room partner reunited them. Either way, it was surely a heartwarming moment that the iconic center-back could relive. It surely must have made some fans nostalgic as well.

Interestingly, just before making her broadcasting debut, Sauerbrunn had spoken about how intimidating it is to work on this side of the game. “It’s so weird being on the side of things,” she said, during her brief chat with The Athletic writer Meg Linehan.

“But it was really lovely seeing a lot of the players that I’ve obviously played with, for a bunch of years. And just kind of seeing how it works on the other side of it has been really fascinating. But yeah, it’s a little intimidating too,” added Becky.

But we believe she did just fine. In fact, the surprise moment from Coffey and Biyendolo is no less than a cherry on top of the cake. Speaking of which, let’s see how other USWNT stars also got themselves into the spotlight.

Quite a happening start to 2025 for the USWNT

Yes, it sure was a thrilling affair. Starting with the goal scorers, a 36th-minute strike helped Catarina Macario get her name on the scoresheet for the USWNT after three years. Then, around the hour mark, Ally Sentnor delivered a stunning golazo, bringing the entire Shell Energy Stadium to its feet in celebration. Talk about scoring the first-ever goal for your nation.

Another key moment saw defender Tara McKeown making her debut by getting a start in the starting XI. She was not alone as Gissle Thompson came off the bench to earn her first game alongside forward Michelle Cooper as well, who rather replaced Yazmeen Ryan. Last but not least is Emma Hayes, who successfully managed to win her first-ever SheBelieves Cup game.

One of many, for sure. Now, the 4x World Champions will rest and then prepare for the next clash against Australia. The Matildas will face the hosts with a 4-0 thrashing they received at the hands of Japan. Let’s see what the outcome will be on Matchday 2.
