Kelly Slater is a legendary surfer. With 11 World Surf league titles and numerous accolades, many fans regard Kelly as the greatest surfer in the history of the sport. While most athletes’ performance deteriorates with age, Kelly has somehow held on. Even at the age of 50, Kelly is competing and winning titles. He holds records such as being the youngest and the oldest athlete to win a World Surf League title.

Kelly’s career has spanned three decades. During that time, the surfer relentlessly traveled the world to participate in various surfing competitions. As he is always on the move, it has fueled Kelly’s impulsive lifestyle. Graham Bensinger once spoke to Kelly’s girlfriend. During the conversation, she explained the challenges the couple has had to face over the years.

Kelly Slater follows a different clock

During their conversation, Bensinger said, “(Kalani) met Slater over thirteen years ago and went to France on their first date. Not much has changed for the couple since.” $25 million worth Kalani Miller told Graham, “Kelly time is always like 5 minutes late. A little delayed. But it’s always kind of just last minute… So you have to be able to drop everything and just go.”

“Like I have no idea what we’re doing tonight or tomorrow or the next day,” said the co-owner of the swimwear line, Mikoh. It seems Kelly doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long, sometimes not more than a day.

“So you could be boarding a plane to some other part of the world tomorrow?” asked Bensinger after listening to the impulsive travel schedule of Kelly and his girlfriend. Kelly’s answer was particularly surprising. She said, “Yeah, well, I would say the majority of Kelly’s flights are booked on the way to the airport… driving,” Miller told the journalist.

Constantly traveling around the world has affected others’ personal life as well. In a 2016 interview with Graham, Kelly opened up about how he has been absent as a father. 

How did Kelly and Kalani meet for the first time?

During the same interview, Kalani Miller revealed how she met Kelly. Kelly and Kalani met at the ASR trade show in San Diego. Kalani and her sisters were working for Roxy and Slater was at the Quiksilver booth. The two met because the Quicksilver and Roxy booths were opposite each other.

Kalani explained Quicksilver and Roxy have the same parent company, while also adding that she was surprised they had never crossed paths despite working under the same parent company for years.
