A tragic event that shocked the surfing community worldwide recently soiled the peaceful coastline of Ensenada, Mexico. During what could have been a happy surfing trip along Mexico’s south coast, three keen surfers—Australian brothers Callum and Jake Robinson and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad—met a horrible end. Because of an attempted heist, they died suddenly, shocking the close-knit surfing community and leaving many, including 11x World Surf champ, Kelly Slater, in shock.

Against the backdrop of the wave of sympathy and sorrow, Slater has become a voice for the victims and their families. In an Instagram story, Slater acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and the dangers associated with traveling to the area while expressing admiration for Mexican surfers who kept a vigil in memory of the deceased surfers.

Sharing the Instagram reel from “10 News First” on his story, he wrote, “Respect to the Mexican surfers holding vigil for the surfers who were senselessly murdered last week in Baja. Mexico has become such a dangerous place for travel. Condolences to the families.” Along with his sincere condolences, he forewarned about the risks associated with visiting Mexico.

However, Kelly Slater shared his feelings previously too over the heartbreaking news on Instagram. Wave riders were grieving this great loss as Slater mentioned, “Our hearts go out to these guys and their friends and families. What an unimaginable tragedy,” his remarks impacted powerfully. While this was happening, locals conveyed their pain while highlighting larger safety issues in the area.

Shocked surfing community unifies in mourning and protest

The bodies of the victims, who were brutally murdered at a camping site, are being returned to their families after the tragedy. They’d planned a well-worn route, heading north to Rosarito after leaving Ensenada to surf and camp along the Pacific coast. They never did, however, arrive at their planned location.

A few days later, their burnt-out pick-up truck and bodies were found close to one other, down a well a few kilometers from the campsite. The peaceful seaside village is still feeling the effects of the violence. An American living near Ensenada from San Diego named Jessica expressed her disbelief, saying, “It’s difficult. In truth, I’ve always felt safe here.” The shocking discovery that all the men had been shot in the head had shocked the local surfing community.

Local surfers in Mexico planned a tribute by creating a circle and paddling out into the ocean to represent unity and remembering. The locals flocked to the streets, waving banners and protesting what they saw as the police’s lack of response. The protesters addressed the wider issue of safety in the Mexican state of Baja California while drawing attention to the significant loss.

They came out to protest holding posters that read, “They just wanted to surf.” A surfer and local resident further added, “This is the struggle, and it is important that it’s not a silent one. We have to continue to draw attention to these problems, continue to protest and march, keep raising our voices and call for an end to the impunity.” To guarantee the protection of surfers and tourists, the incident has brought attention to the significance of increased awareness and alertness.
