People do love their dogs. They like to spend time with them and also teach them new tricks. There are numerous entertaining videos available online where dogs perform amazing feats that leave both their owners and viewers in awe. Yet, there is one thing many would never imagine a dog could even do, and that is surfing.

There are several dogs around the world who can actually ride the wave on a surfboard. And that’s not all. In an annual competition, hundreds of dogs actively compete while surfing.

The Annual Purina Dog Surfing Competition Began With A Blast

The Huntington Beach State Park organizes a yearly surfing competition. The event which has been held for the past 26 years, is part of the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge. Michael Zerman, the Communications Manager for Purina, agrees it is rare to see dogs on the surfboard. Authorities ensure that their owners are near them and lifeguards vigilant to ensure utmost safety. Zerman said in an interview with ABC News, ?These owners are so passionate about their pets and so passionate about their competition, they are cheering just as loudly for other competitors to succeed as they are their own.?

Additionally, in this year’s competition held on June 23, one dog stood out from the rest. His name is Rusty. Rusty’s human, Sophia Sadlowski, proudly exclaimed, “he was born to surf.”? He is also a star on Instagram, with over 24.7k followers.?What?s even more interesting is that Rusty was never taught to surf.

Sophia also revealed to the press that she never formally trained Rusty in surfing. “We took him onto a wave, and he surfed right away. Now he snowboards, skateboards, and surfs,” said she.?This adventure-loving dog’s excitement builds when the beach clothes come out and the surfboards are finally brought forward. However, he is not the only pro out there.

During the two-day event, several surfer dogs competed and received scores based on their ride duration, wave size, and riding style. The strong bond between the canines and their human partners was evident throughout the competition. We must wait and watch for tomorrow’s competition to see what the dogs do again.
