“Freest, Wildest Human on the Planet”: Joe Rogan Once Expressed His Astonishment at Big Wave Surfers Like Laird Hamilton to His Wife.

Joe Rogan had Gabrielle Reece, an American volleyball player, on his podcast for an intriguing discussion. The conversation veered towards the open sea, beaches, and large waves among other things, mainly due to the profession of Reece’s husband Laird Hamilton. Rogan told Reece that what particularly astonishes him about big-wave surfers and what separates them from all walks of life, is their mentality.

In an episode from his podcast on April 2019, Rogan told to Reece that the big-wave surfer mindset is the wildest he has ever seen and that no other humans possess such an exotic embrace with nature. Reece was on the Joe Rogan Experience for the first time and talked about what it was like living with someone like Laird Hamilton.

In the podcast, Rogan said, “Especially I think the big wave surfer mindset. Those are like some of the freest, wildest humans on the planet. It’s a very unusual group of people that rides giant waves of water on the top of the ocean”. His surprise at the kind of life big wave surfers choose to live was evident from his tone and his face. He chuckles at the end to ask Reece if she has ever stopped to think about it.

Reece responds, “I try not to think too much about it ’cause I did marry him”. Both continue chuckling. However, Reece does realize that such a mindset is different from anyone else out there. It is especially significant for someone like Hamilton who has been surfing for more than four decades now.

With the kind of experience Hamilton has with charting big waves and sustaining them for so long, Reece believes that he knows how to balance the wild call of nature with the peace and serenity of family life.

Reece accepts the adventurous life Hamilton lives but fails to understand it

Reece said, “What he wants to do is ride a huge wave during the day and be with his family at night”. Although it isn’t as smooth as it sounds all the time because the pursuit of a large wave can take Hamilton halfway around the globe away from his family. They also require a lot of waiting and patience, since huge gnarly waves don’t come across that often.

Despite a forty-year-long career, Reece said that Hamilton believes he still has a lot more to offer to Surfing. While she does agree with Hamilton, Reece is yet to understand the mindset behind chasing dangerous waves. She said, “I don’t know why you would go towards that though”, expressing her sarcastic take and once again leading Rogan to laugh.
