“Live Fast Die Young Kinda Thing”- 50-Year-Old Kelly Slater Confesses He’s Got Too Much to Lose in a Young Man’s Game

In the world of surfing, Kelly Slater needs no introduction. The legendary surfer is an 11-time World Surf League champion. Surfing is a sport that requires a high level of concentration and is primarily for young people. Despite that, Slater used to rule the surf waves and is still doing it in his 50s. It wasn’t like Slater was born with a silver spoon for surfing; he struggled a lot for all the fame and glory he has.

In the documentary series Kelly Slater: Lost Tapes, he talks about how much effort it took to keep up with everything he has. His life was full of ups and downs. It wasn’t always easy for him to become the world’s most renowned surfer.

A tale of Kelly Slater

2019 was a tough year for Kelly Slater. He sustained an injury in 2017 that forced him to take a two-year leave of absence. The comeback wasn’t easy for the pro surfer.

“All year long they’re going 47-year-old Kelly Slater,” Slater said. The whole world of surfing was excited about his comeback, but he did doubt himself.

“Surfing always been an young man sport,” Slater said and continued, “Live fast die young kinda thing.” As he was growing older, he started to doubt himself. He had to give a big performance to keep up his reputation. 

“There’s nothing for them to lose,” Slater said, and continued, “There’s a lot for you to lose.” He described his opponents as all younger than him and having more time to prove themselves. But the legend was already 47 years old. 

He even explained that an open mindset is needed to adapt, and it wasn’t easy for him.

Kelly Slater, who is currently 50 years old, is still strong in his sport. Despite all the problems he had before, the legend has recovered and is ready for more challenges.

In his whole surfing career, which started in 1992, he has secured 11 WSL titles and 55 event titles. Slater is also focused on his sustainable clothing line.
