Surfing is arguably one of the coolest sports ever. Charting large waves on a surfboard, and going around at a high speed might provide the adrenaline rush many surfers crave for. However, lurking in those waters are grave dangers that no one can predict. It’s not just the sharks or other wild marine creatures, but the water itself could turn treacherous with its rise and fall. In 2020, popular YouTuber and TikToker Bogart the Explorer unleashed a similar kind of horror upon himself, when he went surfing.

The popular online celebrity describes himself on his Instagram page as, “Foodie, Daddy, Explorer from Davao City”. In 2020, The Filipino star posted a rather long caption on his Instagram, detailing his ordeal with the waves.

Bogart the Explorer wrote on his Instagram page, “I was involved in a freak surfing accident over the weekend. My surfboard’s fin cut my right leg. the impact was so strong, the fin broke off. I lost a ton of blood and meat. The main vein in my right leg was cut but missed my main artery by 1cm”. That’s not all. Bogart went on to narrate the intricacies of his surgery and finally thanked the doctors of Gran Ola, Lianga District Hospital.

Bogart is not the only example of how surfing could often turn near-fatal, with its crushing waves coming at a staggering speed. Just last year, French surfer Justine Dupont ended up with a broken shoulder and ruptured knee ligaments after an accident that could’ve killed her. Unlike Bogart the Explorer, who cut his right leg on his own surfboard’s fin, Dupont faced a total wipeout in the waters of Nazare, Portugal.

Even after coming out alive from a surfing accident, the injuries can be unimaginably ghastly at times. Like the one in 2017 that the Culture Trip documented as one of the most terrifying surfing accidents. Incidentally, surfing sensation Balaram Stack saw this happen in front of him. The 31-year-old Florida-based surfer witnessed a horrific accident when a surfer smashed his face in the reef. His lip was cut in half and there was a golf ball indent above his eyebrow. Bogart, on the other hand, required reconstructive surgery, skin grafts, blood transfusions, and physical therapy to walk again.

Feeling a deep sense of gratitude, Bogart the Explorer finally ended his caption with, “You give me strength to fight through this especially my loving wife Jeanette and daughter Music. I love you both so much”. He also mentioned that he was in Davao then, which probably indicates that’s where he suffered his injury.
