Sir John Kirwan, New Zealand-based mental health advocate, and former rugby player has collaborated with global surf park creators Aventuur to introduce a sustainably powered wave pool near Silverdale in the Dairy Flat area of Auckland. Not content with simply redefining the boundaries of surf parks, Sir John Kirwan’s Auckland project is set to go beyond expectations.

According to Stuff, Kirwan revealed plans for a seven-hectare solar farm that will provide renewable energy for the project. The 58-year-old Rugby League player pointed out that the ability to heat the water year-round is especially exciting to him. In addition to the mesmerizing wave pool technology and the year-round heated lagoon, the innovative visionaries have also incorporated sustainability into their design.

He is optimistic that the surfing lagoon is capable of generating over 600 waves per hour across different skill levels. More so, Kirwan believes that it will enhance New Zealand’s performance in the Olympics. The project is set to be a one of a kind attraction.“Nobody else in the world has done this in this way and we’re especially proud of this innovation”, said the Rugby World Cup winner.
