The surfing champion overcame injuries to make his mark at Tokyo Olympics

John John Florence’s path to the Tokyo Olympics was far from smooth. The journey commenced in 2018 when the American surfer suffered a significant setback, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament while surfing in Bali after a competition. Despite the setback, Florence remained determined and successfully returned for the 2019 season. Impressively, he achieved remarkable results, securing a third-place finish and consecutive first-place finishes on the Championship Tour.

However, fate dealt him another blow as he encountered an unimaginable setback, another ACL tear, necessitating surgery. Undeterred, Florence made a remarkable comeback in December. He fiercely competed against fellow surfing veteran Kelly Slater to secure his spot on the Tokyo Olympic team. Although Florence faced further challenges with knee surgery just prior to his Olympic debut, he exhibited tremendous resilience and finished a commendable 9th place.
