The iconic Ocean Spray video from 2020 has been recreated in a recent post on the internet. In 2020, a worker at an Idaho potato warehouse named Nathan Apodaca casually filmed himself riding his longboard, drinking a bottle of Ocean Spray, while lip-syncing to Fleetwood Mac’s classic song, Dreams. This original trend boosted the brand’s sales overnight. While ‘Dreams’ gained popularity, with almost double the streams in no time.

Over time, many were inspired by the trend and made their own versions, including Tom Hayes, the CEO of Ocean Spray. Recently, a surfer recreated Apodaca’s iconic trend, while adding his own joy to the roaring waves.

Throwback to the Ocean Spray’s trend-surfer edition

An Instagram handle @thesurfingmafia released a video of an anonymous surfer riding a barrel while recreating the trend. “We all hope to be this calm when getting barrelled”, read the caption on the video. Every time the surfer approached a wave milestone—entering the wave, backdooring a wave, and eventually being sandwiched between them in the sea—he took a sip. The video definitely served surfers an adrenaline boost.

The initial TikTok frenzy originated when Apodaca unintentionally filmed the perfect Ocean Spray ad. The stage was created for the juicer to enter and acknowledge as more people jumped on board the excitement. After a week, the company gave in to the demand and sent a fresh truck to Apodaca with bottles of Cran-Raspberry. Apodaca shot the video while traveling to work when his car battery died, making it a metaphor for the times in which we live. People were moved by the simple fact that he was making the most of his circumstances, despite difficulties.

The most recent surfing video had a similar effect on the audience, leaving viewers excited about the stunt.
