Surfing seal surprises beachgoers

On June 17, 2023, a remarkable incident unfolded at Pacific Beach, San Diego. It was captured in an Instagram video by Digital Creator and Yeew. Crew Official. The footage, filmed using a drone, depicted a surprising encounter between a seal and a group of surfers. In an unexpected move, the seal swam through the lineup of surfers and, chose to rest on the board of Kim the surfer. The seal seemed to glance back again and again as if sensing something. The surfers gave the seal a calming vibe and it comfortably settled down. Other surfers nearby were amazed by the spectacle.

According to Surfer, worldwide, shark attacks cause around 10 deaths per year, while falling coconuts cause 150 deaths. Most attacks happen in the morning, and July has the highest number of incidents. Florida is the most common location for shark attacks in the US. The chance of surviving a shark attack is 89.4%. While the recent video intrigued netizens, it also raised concerns about safety at the San Diego beach.

As the video went viral some speculated that the seal’s sudden presence could indicate it was being chased by a shark. One person remarked, “Probably a shark chasing it.” Another observer commented, “Usually means he’s running from a shark.” However, amidst the concerns, there were also lighthearted responses, such as someone suggesting, “He wanted to try surfing.” The welfare of the seal also became a topic of discussion, as one person expressed, “I hope someone calls rescue. He needs a good home.”
