Surfing icon Mick Fanning made headlines in 2015. The Australian surfer experienced a shark attack on live television during the J-Bay Open leaving viewers at the beach, and those watching the telecast, fearful for his life. Yet, much to the amazement of all eyes glued to the sea, he reached the shore safely after repeatedly punching the shark and earning his freedom.  Two weeks after the incident, he donated $75,000 to a fellow surfer who had suffered a similar shark attack, providing much-needed funds for their treatment.

Beyond his achievements in surfing, Fanning has consistently shown his support for various charitable causes. Now, continuing his commitment to making a positive impact, the 3x WSL champion is all set to participate in a unique charitable event. Alongside eight other prominent Australians, he will bravely enter a pool filled with ice, all for a noble cause.

The White Lightning is ready to trade his familiar waves for a chilling plunge into The Big Freeze 9. He will be the first to brave the icy pool in support of Fight MND’s fundraiser, held at the iconic MCG on Monday, June 12 at 3:20 p.m. Motor Neurone Disease, a debilitating condition causing the failure and eventual death of the nerve cells responsible for controlling essential bodily functions, currently has no cure.

FightMND, established in 2014, aims to find effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for this devastating disease. In the Facebook post of Herald Sun, it stated that Mick Fanning would join other notable celebrities to further propel this crucial mission forward.

It is worth noting that Fanning has been a passionate advocate for this cause from the very beginning, having connected with co-founder Ian Davis to lend his unwavering support. In a recent interview with Herald Sun, Fanning expressed his deep sense of honor and purpose in participating in the fundraiser. He stated, “I’m very honored to be in the Big Freeze, and right from the beginning, it’s something that I wanted to do. Being able to give back to the people who are fighting MND and giving them support is something I really believe in.” Fanning’s track record of meaningful contributions speaks volumes.

Mick Fanning’s endeavors extend far beyond his achievements in surfing. In 2014, Fanning made a powerful statement by joining a significant protest against the proposed construction of a multi-billion-dollar ocean terminal and casino development. Demonstrating his compassion for those in need, Fanning once again stepped up in March 2020 when severe floods wreaked havoc on the NSW North Coast. Without hesitation, he hopped on a jet ski and ventured into the flood-stricken areas to offer his assistance to the victims.

Fanning actively supports various charitable organizations, including the Starlight Foundation, Wild Ark, World Vision, and Make a Wish. By lending his time, resources, and influence, Fanning plays a vital role in improving the lives of individuals and communities around the world.
