Subway Surfing accident sours New Year

The police received a 911 emergency call regarding the incident on the afternoon of 12 January. They arrived at the Avenue N Station after the distress call at 2.20 PM. According to the New York Times, NYC Transit’s president Richard Davey expressed his grief for the tragic dangerous activities. December 4 2023 marked the last time when police had to deal with the demise of another misguided subway surfer. Despite the repeated warnings for public safety, Metropolitan Transportation said that they catch almost 11 people monthly who try this dangerous activity.

It has been found that a lot of teens who indulge in the hazardous acts of subway surfing are part of organized groups. While these groups hype and challenge their members, nobody is there when a kid loses their life. Although many had a change of heart after the tragedies are reported, some of them remained adamant about risk-taking behaviors. While the authorities are trying to persuade people from subway surfing, many people allege they are failing to put out a strong message.

Is the police lacking in preventing such accidents?

In June 2023, the official X account of the NYPD News posted a tweet discouraging subway surfing. The tweet carried the caption, “Subway surfing on top of a @NYCTSubway is a dangerous & reckless act. The only way to get to your destination safely is by riding INSIDE the train car. Your safety is important to us. There are no waves on these trains! Save the surfing for the beach!”

In response to this, several X users commented that this message doesn’t convince anybody to stop subway surfing. People argued that a stronger message is needed to dissuade people who are already prepared to risk their lives. Instead of a disclaimer, netizens said that a strict and strong warning is needed to prevent such activities.
