Surfing legend Fletcher’s mother was ahead of her time:
Back in their childhood days, when Nathan was still very young, school authorities caught Nathan’s elder brother Christian for mischief. Things grew serious and authorities even summoned their mother. The school then decided that Christian needed a ‘Parent-Teacher Escort’ where his mother would attend school with him. While the situation did not sound fun, the siblings’ mother had no interest in being there. This began a series of events that led to an ongoing trend.

Nathan was in seventh grade when his mother took this decision. She was adamant about Nathan staying at home for his education. She believed the school would teach him how to “cheat, steal, and lie”. In fact, she preferred to Nathan stay back and play or travel by himself. It turned out that this thought was progressive and the entire of Southern California would follow this.
