While diving into the water, be it for swimming or surfing, could be a fun and recreational sport-cum-activity, it definitely demands some precautionary measures. This is due to the many dangers that are associated with open water sources. One such danger is the miscalculation of the depth of water. Recently, when a San Diego State University graduate made this mistake after entering the ocean, he was in for a world of trouble.

23-year-old surfer Collin Bosse is suffering from a traumatic injury after he entered the water and realized he had made a mistake in judging its depth. Three or four steps in, and he hit his head on the bottom of the water floor. Here’s how the incident went down.

Things quickly escalated for the worse for Bosse

It was a normal day for Collin Bosse, who was hanging out with his friends on Mission Bay, off Dawes Street, San Diego. The 23-year-old had graduated with a business degree from SDSU and has been a competitive surfer throughout his life. But that doesn’t assure anybody of an extra layer of protection from the harshness of water. Mistakes are committed, and so did Bosse.

Bosse told 10 News San Diego, “I’m little upset I’m never going to be same way ever again. But then, there’s no reason to feel sorry for myself”, realizing the duality that water represents in his life now. Water has always been like a second home to him, and now it’s also the site of a near-death experience.

After he hit his head, he felt a strange sensation run through his arms and legs. He was paralyzed. Upon hospitalization, Bosse’s fears came true.

Water is his second home

There were several fractures in his spine and severe damage to his spinal cord which left him paralyzed from the chest down. It’s hard to say when might he be completely fit again, and more so, if he could ever enter the water again. But for now, Bosse is feeling particularly optimistic about surviving the ordeal. He is especially grateful to some friends who rushed to save him. Bosse said, “I love them to death. They saved my life. How can you not be appreciative?”

Brutal accidents in water happen quite often. For instance, when bodyboard surfer Evam McMillen lost his life surfing at Dana Point, California. But for Bosse, despite surviving such a close shave with death, he still believes that he will soon recover and get in the water. He said, “But I will 100% surf again. There’s no doubt in my mind”.
