In the midst of a manufacturing crisis, the team found themselves in a race against time to create the custom wetsuits for their Kamchatka expedition. With the pressure mounting, they were determined to incorporate essential features into the suits. This included an abundance of thermal insulation to combat temperatures and a smaller neckline to minimize heat loss. Additionally, they strategically integrated up to 6mm of foam to enhance flexibility and provide a lightweight feel.

Acknowledging the trial-and-error nature of custom-made products, Avakian shared his thoughts on the first prototype, stating, “The first sample needed changes after the ice bath test.” Addressing the need for flexibility and unrestricted movement while surfing in the cold, Fraser Dovell suggested, “As much fur as we can get on him and like six mil bottom and 5 mil around the chest.”

Avakian further proposed incorporating a new foam highlighting its advantages “We can go to the new foam from the rest of the Eco Freedom range. It’s more flexible and lighter.” By utilizing this foam, they aimed to overcome challenges related to paddling in cold. As they embarked on their journey to Russia. However, the real test awaited them in the freezing temperatures of -15°C. Reflecting on the daunting conditions, a professional surfer described it as “like a race against time, your hands and feet are numb.” Throughout their endeavor to create a wetsuit tailored for Kamchatka’s extreme climate, Project Blank and the surfers faced challenges head-on.
