Michael Phelps could not secure a podium finish on his Olympic debut in 2000. However, he metamorphosed into the most decorated Olympian since then. The 2008 Beijing Olympics became the swimmer’s most prominent meet. He clinched eight golds to become the only Olympian to secure such a massive medal haul in a single meet.

However, 2016 marked an end to the legacy of the prolific swimmer. The five-time Olympian expressed his intention to retire from competitive swimming before heading to the meet. Fans of the athlete did not find the announcement too thrilling.

Phelps had a good reason behind the decision to retire from the sport. For one, he was a family man! Therefore, the months leading up to the Beijing Olympics were super hectic for him. The Olympian married the love of his life, Nicole Johnson, on June 13. The couple married in the backyard of their Arizona residence and included only five people as part of the ceremony.

During an interview, Nicole spoke about the special occasion. She said, “We look at June 13 more like we signed our paperwork. There was…how many of us?” To this, Phelps chimed in, “Five of us. In our backyard.”
