People expect athletes at the top in their individual fields to be good friends with each other. Being in an elite class, the topmost athletes may often find themselves lonely. Hence, we might assume that the best of the best are on close terms with each other, perhaps to share the burden. While it may be true sometimes, it is also untrue for many. For example, an incident involving Serena Williams and Michael Phelps.
During the 2012 London Olympics, the two GOATs almost met for the first time. But fate had other plans.

When thinking about the Olympic village, one may assume everyone knows everyone. It may be true but what we often forget is not everyone might be familiar with others.
Similarly, even though they were from the same regiment, Serena Williams and Michael Phelps did not know each other. Surprising as it may sound, the two Americans who were the undisputed champions in their respective fields had never met.

Having competed in different sports at the Beijing and the London Games, one would assume Phelps and Williams knew each other, but they’d be wrong. Talking about the same, Serena said, “No, I’ve never met him.” Adding to her statement, she said, “I was in the [Olympic] Village the other day, and I passed by him, and I’m really shy,” she said. “And he didn’t see me, so …”
However, Serena was hopeful she could meet with Phelps during the 2016 Rio Olympics. “Rio, that’s where I’ll go. I need to get there, Rio,” she said. The next Olympiad was a mixed affair for Serena. She finally met with Phelps, whom she considers an idol. But Serena had to face a shock elimination at the racquet of Elina Svitolina.

Phelps and Serena not meeting each other for years is not the only bizarre incident of his life. Another similar incident, which is perhaps even more bizarre, is of him meeting with Usain Bolt. Both the athletes took part in three Olympics together but never had time to meet.
When they finally met, it was at the unlikeliest of places. When going for the Laureus Awards in Monaco, both of their flights landed at the same time. They were both passing through security when Phelps noticed Bolt. It was the first time they said hello to each other and engaged in small talk. Phelps was in awe of seeing Bolt up close. “His legs are massive. He looks like a horse. So tall.” said Phelps.
