Swimming is one of the best ways to keep the body and mind fit. However, it also carries the risk of mishaps due to various factors. People who tend to go into deep water without learning the technique or swimmers who stay unaware of water temperature have high chances of facing accidents. Recently, the swimming world was stunned when a drowning teenage swimmer was luckily saved by a 9-year-old autistic girl in Lough Neagh. The life-saver’s mother famously known as ‘Swimming Mammy’ narrated the accident.

On June 4, Sunday, the mother of three Joanne Montague talked to Belfast Live about the spine-chilling incident that happened in the coastal area of Lough Neah. Listening to her daughter’s courageous deed, the internet could not stop appreciating her.

During the interview, Joanne Montague shared that in nice weather on Sunday, she went to the coast of the Lough Neagh with her three children. Some teenagers from Moortown also visited the place. Joanne was the only adult watching the children play near the Marina.

Two of the teenage girls, a blondie haired and a black-haired, decided to indulge in open-water swimming. The latter began to go underwater and grabbed onto the blondie haired who also began going underwater. However, the black-haired girl went out of control and could get above the water. Only her one hand was visible out of the water while she kept going down.

Looking at the horrific sight, Joanna immediately rushed to save her. Sadly, she was 70 or 100 meters away which increased the chances of the mishap becoming worse. However, in no time, Joanne’s 9-year-old autistic daughter jumped into the water to save her. She revealed how her child saved the teenager, “She had pushed the girl over to the ladder, to safety.” Once she got out of the water, Joanne and other bystanders made sure she was alright. The Swimming Mammy shared her feelings, “I never witnessed that before and never do I want to again.”

Furthermore, the mother of three explained that autism swim coaching has helped many children including hers. Her daughter was trained to be confident in saving herself and others in the water.
