Being attacked out of the blue can be fatal. This becomes especially true when the predator is ferocious. One’s odds of survival further decrease if the predator has the turf advantage. Along similar lines, on the 4th of July, a woman who was out to enjoy swimming suffered a deadly shark attack in the waters.

The 47-year-old was swimming with her friends in the safety of shallow waters. However, the blanket of safety was instantly pulled when a shark attacked her. The woman got viciously bit on her thigh. However, amidst the unprecedented circumstances,the brave woman chose to put up a fight.

Fighting Back the Shark: Unclenching While Unflinching!

The incident occurred at Bay Shore, Suffolk County. Brooklyn resident Lyudmila Emag was enjoying a swimming vacation with a couple of her friends. However, the holiday soon turned grim when an unprovoked shark attacked Emag. The shark bit her groin and upper thigh area and clamped down on it. She immediately erupted into a chilling scream because of the rushing pain. Despite being suddenly pulled into a deadly situation, Emag decided to set her foot down and fight the marine predator. After her initial surprise subsided, Emag quickly grabbed the shark by its jaws. Then, putting all her strength behind her arms, she tried to pull the shark’s jaws apart!

Fighting back for survival amidst the pain, the 47-year-old unflinchingly overpowered the shark’s vicious jaws! She successfully managed to unclench the jaws of the shark and free her thigh from its grasp. Speaking about her winning brawl in an interview with abc, the brave and strong Brooklyn swimmer said, “I did have a small cut on my on my hand, so it felt like I had to really, you know, struggle to unclench the jaw.” Talking about what went through her mind while she resisted the shark, “I saw the the blood, but I was still walking in. I mean, I knew I’m going to be fine.” Emag was pulled out of the waters by her friends she went swimming with who raised the alarm. The lifeguards immediately called the park police for assistance.

A String of Swimming Disasters on the 4th of July

Emag was taken to the South Shore University Hospital, where she was the second shark attack victim brought in that day. The doctor who treated Emag said this isn’t what the usual cases are like. She said that people are typically in a lot of pain, but Emag was super calm. She said that her body must have gone through an intense adrenaline rush. The case of Emag was one among five shark attacks on people while swimming on Independence Day.

This has made authorities strengthen their presence and vigilance on the shores. As of 17th July, a total of 46 shark attacks have been recorded globally, according to trackingsharks.com. Quite disturbingly, the US witnessed 22 of these attacks, with most instances seen in Florida, with a total of 13 attacks. Due to these recent attacks, authorities are taking extra measures to keep the swimming waters safe for beachgoers.
