The Swimming World Cup 2023 is currently up and running. In this highly anticipated event held in the waters of Berlin, the U.S. athletes were faced with setbacks on the first day. In the 400-meter freestyle, athlete Kieran Smith failed to secure the gold, while Nick Fink lost to Qin Haiyang in the 100-meter breaststroke event.

Interestingly, following these setbacks on the second day, the U.S.A. team gained back its dominance. Staunch athletes, including 19-year-old Katie Grimes and Michael Andrew, who surpassed the Australian swimming prodigy in the 50m event, raised the American flag on foreign soil.

Day two of the Swimming World Cup

According to World Aquatics, in the 50-meter backstroke event, Michael Andrew, who aims to become the next Michael Phelps, stood atop the podium. The 24-year-old athlete surpassed his Australian rival Isaac Cooperin (24.58), who finished the event second to secure the gold in 24.47. The third position was secured by Ksawery Masiul, who finished the race in 25.09.

Apart from Andrew, in the 400-meter medley, 17-year-old Katie Grimes stood atop the podium, winning the event in 4:37.20. The athlete was followed by Japanese swimmer Ageha Tanigawa, and Boglarka Kapas representing Hungary, who took the second and third positions by finishing the race in 4:42.73 and 4:45.17, respectively. Interestingly, this win comes for Grimed after losing the 200-meter event on the first day.

Katie Grime’s loss on the first day of the World Cup

On the first day of the 2023 World Cup, Katie Grimes was surpassed by Chinese star Zhang Yufei in the 200-meter butterfly event. 19-year-old Grimes could not secure a position on the podium by clocking in 2:09.08, while Yufei secured the gold after finishing the race at 2:07.11. Interestingly, prior to the race, Yufei had also managed to secure the first position in the heats, while Grimes finished the race second by clocking in. 2:10.90

All in all, despite the setbacks faced by Grimes on the first day, both Katie Grimes and Michael Andrew brought back the grandeur of the United States on the second day.
