Day 2 of the Swimming World Cup 2023 commenced with heartstopping races and unexpected outcomes. While many legendary swimmers occupied the minds of the fans, Australian ace Lani Pallister was definitely someone who stole the limelight. She lost out on the opportunity to race in the 2022 FINA World Championship because of COVID-19 and wanted to use the Swimming World Cup in Berlin as a stage for her comeback. She gave the fans a performance worth watching in the 400-meter freestyle yesterday but her piece de resistance was yet to come. 

Lani Pallister holds two world records, one of which is in swimming. The 21-year-old entered the 200-meter freestyle on October 7 with hopes of adding one more record to her wall of fame. But, in a complete reversal of fortune, she was left feeling dejected and remorseful by the unexpected results. 

Lani Pallister’s disappointments at Swimming World Cup 2023

Lani Pallister encountered a staunch challenge from her rivals in the 200-meter-freestyle final. She started the day strong with a beautiful finish in the morning heats. The Australian won the heat against Isabel Gose who had the advantage of competing before a home crowd. Pallister ended the race at 1.59.19 seconds and added 851 Aqua Points to her tally. However, entering the finals in the evening, something had changed.

She looked a bit sluggish but quickly regained her peak energetic form before entering the pool. But all that hard work turned to naught when Pallister reached the wall in third place. World Aquatics announced the results in a tweet reading, “Women’s 200m Freestyle 🇭🇰Siobhan HAUGHEY – 1:55.10 WC 🇳🇿Erika Fairweather – 1:56.11 🇦🇺Lani Pallister – 1:56.50”.

Lani Pallister looked just as dejected as Katie Grimes did after winning the 400-meter IM on Day 2 of the Swimming World Cup. With the Olympic Games speeding towards these legendary swimmers every day, they are always striving to post better times. The win matters but not as much as bettering the personal best time in a pre-Olympic year. While Pallister was upset with her result Hong Kong’s Siobhan Bernadette Haughey had every reason to celebrate.

Siobhan Bernadette Haughey breaks World Cup record

Reigning Olympic silver medalist, Siobhan Haughey added one more page to her chapter in the history books. She broke an eight-year World Cup record in stupendous fashion. The old 200-meter freestyle record was held by Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. In the final showdown against Lani Pallister on Saturday, Haughey forced herself to the brink of her being and reached the wall at 1:55.10.

She had incredibly cut down the World Cup record by almost half a second in one fell swoop. This was, however, not as good as her lifetime best of 1:53.92 from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Now both Lani Pallister and Siobhan Haughey are on the Olympic track once more, but the latter has seized a big advantage with her latest feat.
