Popular wrestler Mijain Lopez is inching closer to breaking Michael Phelps’s Olympic record. Recently, a newsfeed shared exciting details about the Cuban wrestler’s plans to make a comeback in the upcoming Olympics. The swimming legend has won in five Olympic events whereas the Cuban wrestler has won in four. If Lopez wins at the Olympics for the fifth time, he will be able to break Michael Phelps’s record.

Both sportsmen have created history in their respective sports. While Phelps obtained 23 gold medals in the Olympics, Lopez was the first to secure 4 Olympic gold medals in wrestling. The wrestler had earlier completed in the Olympics in 2020 where he won his fourth Olympic medal. Recent reports from the Cuban media made an interesting claim that Lopez was preparing with Croatia’s national team. According to NBC News, Lopez along with Luis Alberto Orta and Oscar Pino is being mentored by Raul Trujillo. Trujillo was the head of the Greek and Romanian wrestling team which secured victory in the Olympics.

Not only this, according to United World Wrestling’s Twitter handle, Lopez announced, “I’m coming back to wrestle at the @theParis2024 Olympic Games. “ Continuing, he added, “I want to become the first wrestler to win five Olympic gold medals.” 

While Lopez has publically declared his goal, he will have to fight against some of the best wrestlers in the Olympic trials to represent his country in the Olympics. Here is a glimpse of his next steps as he moves closer to achieving his dream to win in the Olympics.

Lopez will soon participate in the wrestling event in Krygystan with more than 300 wrestlers. This prestigious series will feature wrestling champions who have obtained medals in earlier championships. This series will commence on 1st June 2023. The Cuban wrestler will have to compete with the world’s best wrestlers such as Ravi Kumar from India, Haji Aliyev from Azerbaijan and Mohammed Reza Geraei from Iran.

After this, Lopez will contest in the World Championships in Belgrade in September 2023. Here, wrestlers will have the opportunity to boost their chances to be selected for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
