Great White sharks have gained the most notoriety of all ocean predators. An attack occurred very close to Hurghada, a popular tourist destination in Egypt. A recent video covering the tragic event has gone viral wherein a tiger shark could be seen attacking the 23-year-old Russian in the Red Sea. In the end, the young boy was heard letting out an agonizing cry in the end. “Papa,” he screamed.

As the shark devoured the Russian alive, other tourists were anchored to the shore as the bloodthirsty act unfolded in front of their eyes. The man was later identified as Vladimir Popov by Russian media reports. The 23-year-old did put up a fight. But everyone, including his father, stood there helplessly as eyewitnesses to a lost battle.

Vladimir Popov’s “destiny” was to die in a shark attack- says the deceased’s father

Vladimir had been living in Egypt with his father, Yuri, for some time. The former went snorkeling on that fateful day and met his end. Another eyewitness also retold the attack, saying, “It’s eating his remains now.” Daily Loud shared the video footage of the attack on social media. Witnesses also included Popov’s heartbroken father, who saw the whole incident.

As an aftermath of this tragedy, the authorities have decided to shut off 46 miles of the shoreline around Hurghada. They have also suspended all watersports till further notice.

Uncovering the culprits behind the atrocity

Egyptian authorities were prompt to catch the that mauled Vladimir and was later removed from the waters. Reports informed that it was then killed. Meanwhile, the spot where Popov died has been getting a lot of shark activity for years. Sharks attacked at least five other tourists in the Red Sea in 2010.

Similar attacks happened in 2015, 2018, and 2022. In 2022, two women, an Australian and the other Romanian lost their lives to a shark attack. Both times it was suspected to be a Mako shark. The attack happened just sixteen miles southwards of Hurghada. The authorities reacted in the same manner and sealed the area for tourists. After the latest attack on Popov, the authorities have alleged that they had issued a warning to tourists to remain cautious in the water. But is this enough?
