NCAA’s interim policy on name, image, and likeness (NIL) marked a major shift in collegiate athletics in the United States. The question of whether college athletes should be paid didn’t have any immediate and clear answers, and the NCAA sought to keep things under control for the time being. However, the issue continues to plague the country and Dave Portnoy isn’t one to shy away from expressing his thoughts on the matter.

The Barstool Sports owner remains an eccentric character in the sports world. While his alma mater faces sign-stealing allegations, Portnoy has advised their opponents multiple times to focus on their programs instead of slandering the mighty Michigan. Now, as Florida State faces penalties levied by the NCAA for alleged NIL violations, El Presidente once again has taken to the field to call out the NCAA for what they are.

In his recent post on X, Portnoy has claimed that the entire situation doesn’t make any sense. FSU’s alleged NIL violations have prompted the NCAA to levy a two-year probation on the university’s football program as well as disassociating with its NIL collective for one season. An assistant coach is also likely to face a 3-game ban because of the same reasons. However, Portnoy isn’t convinced. “This is so dumb“, clamored Dave in his post.

The “Michigan Man” also said that the NCAA is trying in vain to reverse its own decisions on allowing collegiate athletes to monetize their brands while also playing for their respective colleges. “The NCAA is pathetic. They are trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube“, Portnoy didn’t hesitate to slam the college athletics authorities for their chaotic actions over the months.

He further claimed that it shouldn’t be the NCAA’s concern if players manage to do good under the NIL program. The New England Patriots also claimed that all of these sanctions by the NCAA come from the difficult responsibility of maintaining their dominance over the athletes. “They are just trying to keep and shred of authority“, wrote Dave.

Portnoy having a tough time

Portnoy hasn’t been having a great time recently. While his college is well on its way to winning yet another Big Ten title, it’s not stopping their Big Ten opponents from trying to bog down the Wolverines with everything they got. On the other hand, his betting frenzy has led to some significant losses in recent months.

And yet, the Michigan Wolverines came up with some light on the horizon as they won the recent Rose Bowl Championship, helping Dave recover considerably from his previous losses. Now, it waits to be seen if Portnoy’s support of the FSU brings any changes to the current situation, or if the NCAA gets their way with things yet again.

One take at a time

Growing up, I didn’t really have an interest in Olympic sports, but it was always something intriguing. As I found the means and the opportunity to explore its world, I found sports like volleyball, and track & field to be something that had tons to offer instead of just scoring through kills and sprinting toward the finish line. Whether it is Nebraska Huskers dominating the court or Noah Lyles maintaining his winning spree on the tracks, these two sports never fail to serve adrenaline rush to their spectators.
