Back in 2020, an Indian by the name of Srinivas Gowda created history by doing the unthinkable. He broke the 100m record set by Jamaica’s Usain Bolt during a local annual race in the Southwestern Indian state of Karnataka. Known as ‘Kambala,’ the race occurs on a slushy-muddy track. Two buffaloes are driven by a whip-wielding farmer across a 100m track. Gowda was blisteringly fast as he finished the race in 9.55 seconds. The time meant Gowda was 0.03seconds faster than the Jamaican and technically the fastest man on the planet.

Nearly two years after the incredible feat, Gowda finds himself in a world of trouble. A member of the Kambala Samithi (association) has raised questions over the legitimacy of the time and has alleged that they faked the results.

Complaint Lodged Against ‘Usain Bolt of Kambala’

While the legendary Usain Bolt may have retired from sprinting years ago, many of his records remain untouched. Chief amongst them is the 100m record he set during the 2009 IAAF World Championships. Every sprinter has since tried surpassing the timestamp but has always come up short. But one man from Southwestern India outpaced the Jamaican with a little help from his buffalo pals.

Srinivas Gowda became an International sensation after his historic achievement, but it seems they are about to be eclipsed. A member of the Kambala Samiti, Lokesh Shetty, is seeking Judicial help after the police did not take any action on his complaint. The complainant has alleged that Gowda duplicated records with the help of some aides to get prize money worth hundreds of thousands from the government.

The complaint accuses Gowda and two others of the alleged forgery. Gunapal Kadamba of Kambala academy and Ratnakar, owner of Sky Weave organization. While Gowda was a trainee at the academy, the organization declared the results. The charges against them are of cheating the public by creating fake records. Shetty has also produced the fake copies along with his complaint.

Usain’s record

Records and Bolt’s name go hand in hand when flipping through any record book. The Jamaican single-handedly dominates the sprinting records, but none are as impressive as his 100m records, especially because of how many times he has bettered them.

Before setting the ultimate 9.58-second mark, Bolt made and broke his records multiple times. At the 2008 Reebok Grand Prix, Usain clocked 9.72 seconds in the 100m to surpass Asafa Powell’s record of 9.74 seconds. At the Beijing Olympics a few months later, Usain improved his PB by clocking in 9.69 seconds. Then, in 2009, Bolt ran his fastest 100m ever as he clocked in 9.58 seconds. His average speed during the event was 37.58 km/h, while at his fastest, Bolt reached a top speed of 44.72 km/h.

When Usain retired in 2017, the time of 9.69 seconds was his third-fastest. His time of 9.63 seconds at the London Olympics and 9.58 seconds at the World Championships are still the Olympics and world records, respectively.
