Being in a constant process of development is just another aspect of track and field stars’ daily routine. For Olympic medalist Gabby Thomas, the main boost to help her stay on track comes from within. While the star has acknowledged that her inspirations come from many places, the importance of practice cannot be overstated. However, repeating the same training routine can become mundane, but the young athlete also understands the necessity of it to make sure her career becomes worthy of remembrance.

Track and field star’s focus on the boring things

In an interview with The Running Effect, Thomas talked about what it takes to be among the elite of the sport. “What it actually takes to become the top 1% isn’t really talked about enough“, said Gabby, highlighting how practice truly makes things perfect. “It’s the boring moments that all come together“, said the University of Texas student. “There isn’t a big secret to it“, revealed Thomas, stressing the fact that even though not everyone wants to do boring things repeatedly, it is what it is.

Gabby also said that prioritizing the professional career is something that helps the track and field star stay focused. “Whether that is 300m repeats, saying no to social events, getting sleep, doing repetitive tasks“, wrote Thomas in her Instagram post. Thomas further elaborated that an athlete’s glamorous podium moments are essentially the culmination of all the boring moments they have gone through during their training.

Thomas acknowledged that sharing the boring training regime isn’t something that fans like to see saying they “aren’t fun to watch“. “But that’s what wins medals“, she stated bluntly and urged the fans to remember that this tedious thing is what ensures an athlete’s reign of dominance on the tracks. And Thomas’ compatriots will only testify that her words come from a place of experience.
