In the 2023 season, Tsegay shot to fame at the Prеfontainе Classic in Eugеnе, Orеgon. The Ethiopian middle and long-distance runner etched her name into the record books, leaving the world ablaze with her 5,000-meter dash. Understandably, the track and field community was waiting with anticipation for her to start the new season.

However, things did not go as planned. Two weeks ahead of one of the major season openers where Tsegay was set to compete, the star runner announced to withdraw her name from the tournament.

When the world can see the Ethiopian sensation on tracks?

Astana Indoor Meet for Amin Tuyakov Prizes is the first World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting of 2024. Slated to begin on January 27 in the Kazakh capital Astana, the meet will feature the likes of Olympic gold medalist Andre De Grasse. The X page of Owen M. recently announced Gudaf Tsegay’s withdrawal from the event while writing, Gudaf Tsegay has reportedly withdrawn from the women’s mile at the Astana Indoor Meet for Amin Tuyakov Prizes on January 27th. She’s now set to make her season opener over 1500m at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on February 4th.

Tsegay concluded her 2023 season with a bang, not only winning the 5,000 m race in Eugene Diamond League but also setting a new world record on the way. She completed the race in a time of 14:00.21 breaking the previous record by Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon (14:05.20). In that run, Tsegay defended her 5000m title from Eugene Diamond League 2022. However, her list of accolades is far beyond that.

A continuous performer in the middle and long-distance category

In the year 2023, Gudaf Tsegay ruled in the World Athletics Championships in Budapest as well. She clinched the gold medal in the women’s 10,000m dash. She is a Tokyo Olympic Bronze medalist in the 5000m. She is a regular face in the middle and long-distance running realm. Her numbers in the indoor championships also speak volumes about the anticipation of her participation.

She is a two-time World Indoor Championship 1,500 m medalist. She has a bronze (2016) and a gold (2022) in her kitty from the tournaments. Apart from that, she holds the indoor world record in 1500 m. Putting up a dazzling stat, she was the world’s fastest woman in the indoor 5,000m as of September 2023. Understandably, her participation in any indoor meet comes with its associated excitement. The reason for her absence in the Astana Indoor Meet remains unknown till now.
