The track and field world has faced yet another low when it comes to drug testing. Despite being one of the most frowned upon activities, this practice is being adopted by multiple athletes. Now the Ethiopian long-distance runner Tsehay Gemechu has been suspended for the consumption of illegal substances.

This is not the first time any athlete has faced the consequences of their actions when it comes to doping. However, Gemechu is not the one alone facing suspension, another athlete who joined the list is Beatrice Toroitich from Kenya. The track world is aghast after witnessing such consecutive unfortunate events.

Tsehay Gemechu faces suspension for a drug case

Tsehay Gemechu is one of the top distance runners in Ethiopia. She attained the second position at the 2023 Tokyo Marathon by clocking a time of 2:16:56, which etched her name in history books, as it is the ninth-fastest marathon time in the history of Marathons. She also holds a personal best of 14:29 over the 5,000m. Despite such staunch skills, she is now under the consequences of her choices and is facing suspension by AIU. The Citius Mag shared a post announcing the same on their X account, “The Athletics Integrity Unit has provisionally suspended Ethiopia’s Tsehay Gemechu after detecting abnormalities in her athlete biological passport”.

Her drug test took place through ABP, which chooses the biological parameters over time that have the capability of indirectly revealing the effects of doping. After getting suspended for using the non-specified substance, she was supposed to run the Valencia Marathon but has now been removed from the elite start list.

Under this provisional suspension, Gemechu is temporarily banned from being a part of any athletic competition or activity before a final decision is made at a hearing which is analyzed under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules or the Integrity Code of Conduct. The Kenyan athlete Beatrice Toroitich is also undergoing the same consequences.

The AIU has been extremely strict when the situation comes to doping and the usage of illegal substances. After Tsehay Gemechu, another Kenyan athlete. Beatrice Toroitich has been examined and given a provisional suspension for the usage of drugs. The AIU has taken to their X account to announce the news.

They shared a post that said the AIU has provisionally suspended the entity for access to prohibited substances which are 19-Norandrosterone, 19-Noretiocholanolone, Clomifene, and Canrenone. She is temporarily banned from participation in any athletic competition until any decision is taken.
