F1 racing is a global phenomenon. A full racing season tours almost throughout the world and gives the fans a chance to experience the thrill. The sport’s popularity gained a massive boost after the release of the hit Netflix series Drive to Survive. But despite what it has done for F1 as a sport, America’s track and field legend Michael Johnson thinks a similar series might not be as beneficial for athletics.

Notably, female sprinter Dina Asher-Smith was the first one to propose this idea, as Johnson has his say on the same.

Formula 1: Drive to Survive is a docudrama produced by the popular OTT platform Netflix. It gives a behind-the-scenes look at the drivers, races, and teams involved in the sport. Each season captures a full year of championship races.

While giving an interview, sprinter Dina Asher-Smith proposed the idea of a similar series capturing the sprinters of the world. However, American track and field legend Michael Johnson recently took to Twitter to let his feelings known as well.

Retweeting the original post, Johnson wrote, “A Netflix Drive to Survive type series for track & field could be great, but don’t think it would have the same result as F1. The fundamentals of that sport were already pretty healthy. Track & Field, not so much!”

The track and field meets might be too hard to capture for a series because of their sheer volume. Sprinters pull out of races at the last moment and the schedule is too hectic. The fundamentals of F1 in comparison are rather simple- a set no. of races take place with the same drivers throughout the year.

Other series made on sports

While ‘Drive to Survive’ may be the best sports docuseries at the moment, there are some other series that also focus on the world of sports.

Amazon Prime Video’s ‘All or Nothing’ focuses on a different team each season. It covers coaches, player feuds, and daily practices. So far, the most popular seasons have featured soccer clubs Juventus, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.

‘The Test’ follows the Australian Cricket Team in their path of redemption after the ball-tampering scandal. The series is produced by Australia cricket’s governing body and all the footage fans wish for is provided.
