Jackie Chan is among the icons of global cinema. He reinvigorated the demand for martial arts films after Bruce Lee tragically died. Like his predecessor, Chan also found immense success in both Hong Kong and Hollywood. However, for the action comedy icon, professional success didn’t translate to his personal life. Jackie Chan’s son Jaycee Chan aimed to follow in his father’s footsteps, but since success did not knock on his door, their relationship gradually soured. However, Chan and his wife Joan’s bond remained strong, despite their son’s difficult history.

Once, Jaycee posted an old photo of himself with his father and mother, which reminded Jackie Chan of a bizarre warning he once had for his wife. The co-author of the global icon’s biography, Zhu Mo, wrote about it in the book.

After struggling to find success Jaycee Chan got into trouble with the law. “In August 2014, Jaycee was arrested in Beijing for possession of marijuana and providing a place for others to use it,” wrote Zhu Mo. In February 2015, he was sentenced to six months of prison time. After Chan’s son got out of prison, the family met for a reunion.

On the sixth day of the Chinese New Year, Jaycee Chan posted “a couple of” old photos with his family on Weibo, the Chinese alternative for Twitter. Chan’s son captioned the post as “starting anew.” Zhu Mo revealed that those photos showed, “Jackie shaving Jaycee’s head while Joan stood beside them.” While the emotional post moved many on Weibo, it reminded Chan of the time he warned his wife about her hair.

“Joan’s had long hair all these years because I like her that way,” the martial arts master later told Mo. “I often tease her by saying I’d divorce her if she ever cut her hair,” said the actor. However, the Honorary Oscar winner couldn’t pinpoint why he liked Joan with long hair. “Maybe it’s because my mom had long hair. It was so long it reached the ground,” Chan told Mo. Zhu Mo recounted Chan’s confession in Chapter 25 of his book, Jackie Chan: Never Grow Up.

Joan Lin told Chan she was pregnant in 1981 after they had been dating for a while. “I said right away, ‘I want to keep the baby,'” revealed Chan in Chapter 17 of his biography. However, a friend advised them to have the baby in “relative secrecy” in America since the couple was not married.

Chan worked through the pregnancy and finally visited Lin “only when the baby was about to be born.” However, they decided to get married before Jaycee was born. So the couple found a pastor and married in a private room, of a Los Angeles coffee shop. The rest, as it turns out, is history.
