“Tug of War Going On”: Bruce Lee’s Bizarre Ways to Achieve His Dream Almost Made Him ‘Difficult to Work With,’ Revealed His Wife Once

Fans have revered Bruce Lee‘s martial arts prowess for decades. However, Lee was more than just a martial arts expert well-versed in different combat styles. Lee was a visionary filmmaker and actor. He used his martial arts knowledge as a tool to enhance the action sequences of his movies. Because Lee possessed such versatility, he often got involved in every aspect of filmmaking. However, the legend’s wife once revealed that Bruce Lee’s uncompromising approach to filmmaking almost made Lee “Difficult to work with.”

During a rare interview, Linda Lee Cadwell spoke about her husband’s dream project, Enter the Dragon. Linda revealed that the Hollywood action icon had envisioned the movie for decades. When Golden Harvest studios gave him creative control of the project, Lee oversaw everything about the film. However, some may have found his obsession with the filmmaking process bizarre.

Bruce Lee gave everything to make his passion project a reality

In the interview titled ‘Remembering Bruce Lee – Linda Lee Cadwell’, Lee’s wife revealed how the Hollywood icon made Enter the Dragon. Directors often have to make compromises to their vision to suit the needs of the studio, production budget, and other factors. However, Lee was insistent about what he wanted to include in the film. “There was reluctance and tug of war going on about exactly how the product would end up,” said Linda.

However, the global superstar didn’t want to make any compromises that would alter his vision. Cadwell said Lee had a firm idea of “What he wanted to communicate martial arts wise, philosophically… through this film, and he was very determined.” Cadwell revealed that Bruce also made extensive changes to the script and the story of Enter the Dragon.

According to Cadwell, initially, the script was titled Blood and SteelHowever, the visionary filmmaker made “numerous changes” to the script. Bruce also worked closely with the producers to ensure the changes went through. Cadwell said some might have thought Bruce Lee’s methods to be bizarre. However, his meticulousness is why the film “has endured all these years.”

The significance of Enter the Dragon

Enter the Dragon was the last film Bruce Lee could complete before his death. The film premiered in L. A. a month after Lee’s untimely passing. Despite having a budget of less than a million dollars, Enter the Dragon is estimated to have earned over 20 times its budget. Many critics have said that Lee’s passion project is among the greatest martial arts movies ever.

In 2004, the United States National Film Registry said they would preserve the movie. They said the 1973 film was “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Lee didn’t compromise on his vision, even if it made working with him difficult. However, it paid off in the end.
