USWNT Star Megan Rapinoe Once Confessed That Despite Fearing Consequences, She Is an “Impulsive” Decision Maker: “Kind of Person Who…”

Megan Rapinoe, the soccer icon, is a person of great skills and character. She steered the USWNT to two magnificent World Cup wins; the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments. She was also instrumental in helping Team USA win gold against Japan at the 2012 London Olympics. Moreover, she is renowned for speaking up on issues like equal pay and the need to embrace one’s real identity.

She developed ardent love and passion for the game at four years of age. Interestingly, her parents taught her something more important than winning. It was to be aware of how she lived her life. The seed was sown. Since then, the soccer legend always did what was right despite backlashes and disagreements.

One can’t forget the incident of Rapinoe kneeling in 2016 in solidarity with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick. In light of this, people are always eager to know what motivates Megan to do this. 

Megan Rapinoe doesn’t always rehearse 

In her book, One Life, Rapinoe walks us through some of the most significant moments of her life. Her journey through life and the various game-changing events have only made her qualities more pronounced and inspiring. In her book, she describes herself as “impulsive.”

She explains that although she is aware of the consequences, as learned in her childhood, she chooses to stand firm on what’s right. She said, “The decision to kneel wasn’t one I’d made lightly.” Furthermore, she said that she hadn’t given much thought to how it might be taken.

In trivial contexts, I can be impulsive—the kind of person who dyes their hair pink the night before a huge tournament,” she stated, explaining the nature of her decisions. Regarding kneeling, she said, “Any risk assessment I did wasn’t premised on how my actions might land, but on calculating the risk—huge, societal, unignorable, in my view—of doing nothing.” 

Consequences of Rapino’s impulsive actions

Rapinoe had expected the level of backlash and criticism she would receive for taking the knee in solidarity with Colin to protest racial injustice and police brutality. Though her family didn’t speak against her action, they didn’t agree with what she had done. She was one of the first high-profile athletes to do so. On the contrary, the support she received was overwhelming.

She also explained that she had knelt in support of Colin and to start a more thoughtful conversation about race. It was a show of solidarity, to say the least.

Through the disputes with coaches and officials over her choice to kneel, to fight for equal pay and gender equality against US Soccer Federation, she is nothing but a superstar.
