The NCAA Women’s Volleyball witnessed another heated battle as two top-ranking teams went against each other in an explosive match. The volleyball teams of fourth-ranked Stanford University clashed against the sixth-ranked team of Oregon in a game that was decided in the fifth set. Winning back-to-back sets, both teams were just an arm’s length away from the win on 9 November.

Stanford women paralyze vicious reverse sweep attempt

The women of Stanford University found themselves up against a wall while facing a scorching attack from Oregon. Stanford had gained an early lead of two sets against Oregon and was just an inch away from victory. However, Oregon’s volleyball team retaliated hard and quickly equalized the score by winning two back-to-back sets. Despite the momentum being on Oregon’s side, however, it was the team of Stanford that emerged victorious in the end. NCAA Women’s Volleyball tweeted about the Cardinal win on its official X account. The tweet said, “STANFORD SURVIVES IN FIVE. No. 4 @StanfordWVB avoids the reverse sweep on their own court and takes down No. 6 Oregon in five sets.”

The fourth set had Stanford worried since they couldn’t even cross the 20-point mark as they lost their second consecutive set. But, the team regrouped and held back an almost certain clean sweep to take the home-court win. While Stanford ultimately took the win, the Ducks players did a fabulous job as well. Stanford has dominated Oregon in almost every NCAA season. In fact, there was a time when it also registered a 39-match winning streak against the sixth-ranked team.

Striking a historic nemesis hard in the belly

Oregon may be the sixth-ranked team in the current NCAA season, but it has historically almost always struggled against Stanford. Head-to-head, the Ducks have won just seven times while Stanford has tasted victory 65 times. While there was a time when Oregon got destroyed for 39 straight matches against the Cardinal players, the Ducks have significantly improved now.

In the last ten face-offs between both women’s volleyball teams, the Ducks won three out of ten times. While this is far from impressive, considering their history, and the close shave on 9 November, Oregon may soon catch up. Although the Ducks were forced to swallow a loss, their effort counts for a hard strike in the belly of their historic nemesis.
