US Shot Put Olympic Champion Ryan Crouser Handed Shocking Loss by Brazilian Opponent at Indoor World Championships 2022

The 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships saw incredible performances throughout the games. Armand Duplantis broke the world record for pole vault competition. Similarly, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist in the shot put Ryan Crouser, lost the event. Brazil’s Darlan Romani took home the gold medal with a brilliant display. He shocked the Olympic champion and took home the grand prize.

While all the expectations were on Crouser to win the competition, Romani performed admirably well to shock the audience in attendance. A great result of the Brazilian.

Ryan Crouser fails to win a gold medal

The two-time Olympic gold medalist finished second after measuring a throw of 22.44 meters. The world record holder was put to the sidelines with Romani throwing a massive 22.53 meters to win the gold medal. He was just seven centimeters short of his season’s best throw. Hence, it proved to be the shock of the Indoor Championships in Belgrade. With a throw of 21.74m, he started solidly in the opening round.

During the start of the competition, Crouser threw an opening shot of 22.44. But, in the third round, Romani got the distance that proved to be a stunning victory for the Brazilian. This was the seventh-best Indoor shot put throw of all time. Facing a lot of pressure to win the gold medal, Crouser did not manage to get a great throw in the fourth round. Hence, the gold went to the Brazilian superstar.

After the competition, he talked about struggling with an impingement in the radial nerve of his arm, that may have led to the poor outing. This is his first defeat since the 2019 World final in Doha and it shows the dominance he showcased in the event.

“I’m having some trouble extending all the way on the ball and it’s definitely costing me some distance. I would have been happy to win but was not expecting that a 22.44m would not. Huge congrats to Romani,” said Crouser.
