A recognition for a staunch performance

Recently, Kylie Welker made a historic achievement for the Iowa Women’s wrestling team. The top-ranking wrestler at the NCAA division who competes at 170 pounds was awarded as USA’s Wrestling Athlete of the Week on 4th January. To share the ecstatic movement with the spectators, USA Wrestling took it to their Twitter account and posted a picture of Kylie Welker receiving the honor. Along with the picture, they penned, “IowaW_Wrestling sophomore kylie_welker named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week for her efforts at the nwcawrestling National Duals“.

Iowa Hawkeyes’ first National Championship title

Clarissa Chun’s top-ranking team concluded NWCA National duals on a happy note. In a stellar showdown, the Hawkeyes won by 21-20 while defeating the opponent team, North Central. This helped them to lift the trophy of the championship for the first time in history. However, this was not as easy as it may seem to be.

Initially, North Central was winning the showdown as they pinned Iowa’s wrestler five times and had a streak of five match wins. But Marylynne Deede, at 155 pounds, managed to take over and defeat the opponent in just 98 seconds while putting Iowa back on top.

Besides this, Kylie Welker’s 11-3 win over Yelena Makoved in the 170-pound weight class added another point to the team’s total. The major reason for Kylie’s appraisal this week is that she managed to add a team point to cover Jaycee Foeller’s loss of 191 pounds. This proved vital for the team to lift the trophy.
