The wrestling team seems to have gelled well with their new mentor. A recent social media post highlighted how the girls are having a good time with her.

The new leader of the wrestling team

Lehigh women’s wrestling team recently signed Brazel Marquez as the team’s new head coach. On December 7th Lehigh Women’s Wrestling Club took to their official account to add a new video on their account. The video was captioned, “We’ve been having a lot of fun since Coach Marquez has joined us here at Lehigh!  It further says, “Our competition schedule has increased as well as our training expectations! It’s been a lot of fun!”. In the video the concise words say, “POV Lehigh gets a women wrestling coach.”

Brazel Marquez joins Lehigh after stints at Auburn University, Emmanuel College, and Menlo College. Kerry McCoy, the executive director and head coach of the Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club, is confident in Marquez’s capability. He said, “I know she’s going to do a great job and take this from a club program and build it to a varsity program. She’s the right person for the job.” Marquez shares her excitement for the role, envisioning it as an opportunity to provide stability for aspiring women wrestlers.

Obstacles for Brazel Marquez and her vision

Marquez said on taking up the role, “I’m excited to provide (stability and structure) for these women who have been craving that and deserve that, especially being a female coach.” Despite the challenges posed by the scarcity of Division I women’s wrestling teams, Marquez embraces the opportunity to carve a unique path. Her approach involves transitioning from the club model to a scholarship and funding model, offering the team a chance to pioneer and define their trajectory.

With only four Division I women’s wrestling teams in the US, Lehigh faces administrative hurdles and funding uncertainties. And fortunately, the coaches are aware of this fact. She adds, We don’t have a major blueprint right now, but that also frees up creativity to be able to make it your own.”. Her words, excitement for girls, and aspiring wrestlers’ anticipation have taken the internet by storm. Fans await for more updates from the team.
