Top Wrestling Prospect Switches Allegiances to Make Up for 2 Missed NCAA Campaigns in One Final Run

Every new season of College Wrestling is exciting and thrilling as it brings new names and teams to follow. In the 2023-24 final season teams, coaches and competitors will face each other for the NCAA winning title. So far, Penn State has been the reigning master in the NCAA wrestling tournaments. However, in the 2022 Big Ten Championship Michigan defeated Penn State.

Amidst this, a top wrestling prospect of Michigan switched allegiances to make up for 2 missed NCAA  campaigns. He aims to delve into the final run. He missed the two previous wrestling seasons due to an injury.

Top Wrestling figure decides to go for one final run

In 2021-22 Austin Gomez returned to College wrestling after missing two seasons due to an injury. He dealt with severe concussions. He attempted his best at Iowa State but unfortunately due to the injury had to put an end. After an enormous comeback, in the last season, he aims to showcase his potential. The Wrestling Room on its official Twitter handle mentioned Austin Gomez and posted “One of the nation’s most exciting wrestlers is returning for one final NCAA run… “

Earlier he decided to forego college wrestling and look forward to Freestyle Wrestling World Championship and Olympics. But now he switched his allegiance and decided to go for his final year of eligibility. This is what he mentioned in his earlier statement, “After taking some time to reflect on this past season, I have decided to not apply for my medical hardship year and not take my final year of eligibility.”  Gomez started his burgeoning wrestling career in 2017.

Austin Gomez’s wrestling career

In 207-18, he scored 8-0 during his redshirt year. After that, he was included in the starting lineup for the next year. In the 2019 NCAA tournament, he went 24-7 at 133 pounds weight class. He thought he would retire from the wrestling tournament but he decided to come back and got transferred to Wisconsin.

In his starting year, he wrestled for 149 pounds and gained many appraisals. Further, he went 23-4 and clinched the Big Ten title against Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso. In the year 2022, he went 0-2 at the Big Ten Tournament but completed the 16th round of NCAA, facing injury.
