20-Year-Old Greco-Roman Wrestling Sensation Humbles Iranian Olympic Champion at World Wrestling Championship

The concluding day of the United World Wrestling Championships 2023 has arrived. In the team rankings, the US stands at the top with 148 points. Iran is in the second spot with 110 points, followed by Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan with 80, 74, and 66 points, respectively. Now, as the Quarterfinals on day 8 have ended, the excitement among the wrestling community is at its peak.

Only two more competitions in the Greco-Roman for the Olympics and one for the Non-Olympics weight class will commence.  67 kg and 87 kg weight classes will come under the Olympics category and 63 kg under the Non-Olympic weight class. Mammadov, Hasrat Jafarov, and Islam Abbasov are among the Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestlers. They are wrestling to receive a license for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Hasrat Jafarov plays for 67 kilograms and yesterday he defeated an Iranian Olympic Champion.

Hasrat Jafarov wins over Iranian Olympic Champion

The 20-year-old Greco-Roman wrestling rising star had a win over his Iranian counterpart Mohammadreza Geraei. He trounced the Iranian wrestler with a score of 10-0 in the 67 kg Quarterfinal match. Interestingly, Slavik Galstyan, from Armenia will be his next opponent. Slavik had a win over Alejandro Sancho (USA) with a point of 9-0.

The 2002-born wrestler Hasrat earlier clinched Gold in the 2023 European wrestling Championships. He had a sturdy fight with Joni Khetsuriani. He swept the board with a score of 3-2. Besides this, he also has the title of U20 and U23 World Champion. In the recent World Champion Quarterfinal match with Mohammadreza, he faced a tough counterattack but managed to lift and slam at the end.

About Greco-Roman wrestling Olympic champion Mohammadreza Geraei

27-year-old Mohammadreza clinched the 67 kg gold title at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Also in 2019, he won the Asian and U23 Championship. However, he underwent an injury during the tournament, but recovered from his lesion and evolved successfully.

Mohammadreza belongs to a family of wrestlers. His brother Mohammadali Geraei, popularly known as “The Falcon” is a consistent Grappler. He secured Gold in the 2018 Asian Games. Despite the title of Olympic Champion, it was shocking to see Mohammadreza snagging defeat from Hasrat Jafarov.

In his next match, Hasrat will face Slavik Galstyan. Either he will win or lose. This match will be very crucial as it will pave the way for Hasrat to reach the Paris Olympics.
