West Virginia University is making leaps and bounds in the domain of wrestling. It has traversed a long trajectory to occupy the current prestigious foothold. Mountaineers and their recent representation in the FloWrestling rankings speak volumes regarding their sporting prowess. In the current season’s rankings, WVU has the highest number of ranked wrestlers to date.

A total of nine Mountaineers have achieved a ranking in the fourth edition of the current season’s FloWrestling rankings. As a team, the WVU wrestlers entered the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll with the ranking at No. 21. Who exactly are these wrestling wunderkinds?

Nine mountaineers hold strong in the rankings

In the 4th edition of the current season’s FloWrestling rankings, nine Mountaineers have racked up positions on the leaderboard. These include Jeff Strickenberger (125), Jordan Titus (141), Ty Watters (149), Caleb Dowling (157), Peyton Hall (165), Brody Conley (174), Dennis Robin (184), Austin Cooley (197) and Michael Wolfgram at Heavyweight.

With the challenging games lined up ahead, the Mountaineers are ready to take up the challenging Big 12 duals. With the highest number of ranked wrestlers, they have the confidence and grit to battle in the wrestling games with all their might. These formidable lads will be pitted against the best there is – Oklahoma.

WVU wrestlers professionally at loggerheads with Oklahoma

The WVU wrestling team will be pitched against Oklahoma this coming Sunday. The match is scheduled for December 3, 2023, amid great fanfare and hysteria. It will take place at Morgantown, in West Virginia inside the WVU Coliseum. WVU wrestlers, currently at rank no. 21, will be playing against No. 18 Oklahoma.

The next matches lined up are scheduled against Oklahoma State, ranked no. 11 on January 14. Following this, they will also play against Missouri, placed at No. 3 on January 26. For the first time since 2003, the Mountaineers will be starting the season at 4-0.

The match against Oklahoma on Dec 3 accounts for the Big 12 Conference Opener. The Mountaineers are back and stronger than ever for intercollegiate wrestling. After they got a 31-7 victory over Clarion and attained team championship performance at the Shorty Hitchcock Classic, they are gung ho on entering Big 12 duals head-on. “I think it’s really challenging, and it’s going to prepare our guys for the ultimate test, which is the NCAA Tournament,” sixth-year head coach Tim Flynn remarked.
