Recently, the Los Angeles Lakers took to celebrate their NBA In-Season Tournament (IST) victory. They emphasized their championship by hanging the black-and-gold banner. However, the social media is divided in their opinions regarding it. Once again, Barstool Sports’ CEO, Dave Portnoy, who has never failed to join the bandwagon on pertinent sports topics, revealed his thoughts on the same.

While the team is proud of its own rights, commemorating the event has garnered positive and negative criticisms, given the legacy of the Lakers in the NBA championship. Dave Portnoy took to his Twitter handle to express his opinions on the much-debated move. Let’s take a look.

Dave Portnoy expresses disappointment over Lakers’ banner display

Dave Portnoy took to his Twitter handle, @stoolpresidente to depict his concern over the Lakers hanging a banner in the rafters to celebrate the NBA’s inaugural IST championship. Tagging his Barstool Sports blog wherein Portnoy wrote, “The Lakers Really Hung Their In-Season Tournament Banner Next To All Their Championship Banners,” he vouched for his dismay over the occasion.

Portnoy tweeted, “This can’t be real!” This is in continuation with his beef with the Lakers, which took to public spectacle last year. He had self-proclaimed himself to be the “biggest LeBron hater of all time.”  Indeed it is this way because he is a pro Boston sports fan. Also, he expressed his hatred for LeBron James for all the times he has defeated the Boston Celtics in the past few years.

In the recent tournament play, the Lakers went 7-0. And LeBron James’ vintage performances secured the team its victory. And, as they took to celebrate it with the banner recognition, it is indeed that Dave Portnoy was not particularly pleased with it.

Lakers’ banner display garners criticism

For Portnoy, he certainly aligns with those who feel that Laker’s NBA IST victory does not merit a banner. Hanging it at Crypto.com Arena, they took to a modest display of their championship banner. It is a smaller one and does not resemble the other championship banners of the Lakers. However, given their recent championship, they are en route to the NBA Finals. At 15-11, they currently occupy the 8th position in the Western Conference.

The Lakers already have altogether 17 NBA championship banners. It is a tie-up to the Boston Celtics, Portnoy’s favorite team, who currently have the most number of banners in the league. And, now with the recent banner display, Portnoy is displeased and is not happy with the Lakers’ move.
