The Washington Capitals were hanging by a thread, backs slammed up against the wall after Carolina Hurricanes’ last W. Down 3-1 in the series, the Caps brought the fight back home for Game 5, with puck drop hitting at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday at Capital One Arena in D.C.; a do-or-die kinda night with the crowd buzzing and hopes hanging in the air like playoff magic.

Now here’s where it gets fun. While fans were locked in, holding their breath and maybe crushing some wings, the Carolina Hurricanes decided to step up and seal the deal. And honestly? Their playoff dub didn’t just knock out the Caps, it totally saved Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets fans from a last-minute streaming scavenger hunt. With Carolina taking care of business on time, there was no overtime mess, no channel hopping chaos, just pure hockey and streaming!

Sean Shapiro hopped on X mid-game with a lil’ heads-up for hockey fans everywhere, dropping: “Programming note: if Canes-Capitals goes to OT and you want to watch Stars-Jets, find TruTV or stream it on Max.” Basically saying don’t freak out if TNT switches things up, just grab the remote (or your phone) and flip to the backup plan.

And speaking of Stars vs. Jets… oh boy, it’s crunch time in Winnipeg! The Dallas Stars are rolling into town, sitting pretty with a 3-1 series lead, and the Jets? Well, they’re hanging on to their Cup dreams by a thread, tryna avoid packing their bags. It’s Game 5, and it’s all going down this Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 9:30 p.m. ET on TNT (or TruTV… or Max, ya know, pick your fighter). The stakes? Sky high. The vibes? Tense. The drama? Chef’s kiss.

Whew, the Caps vs. Carolina Hurricanes showdown was a full-blown heartbreaker for D.C., and a straight-up mic-drop moment for Carolina. With less than 2 minutes left in regulation, Andrei Svechnikov came in hot, caught a slick return pass from Sean Walker on the rush, and sniped one from an absurd angle, bottom right circle magic. Just like that, the Canes pulled ahead 2-1. And to ice the drama, Seth Jarvis threw in an empty-netter with 27 seconds to spare, shutting the door with a clean 3-1 win and punching Carolina’s ticket to the Eastern Conference Final.

Yup, the Caps are officially donezo. But it wasn’t a total breeze. Jordan Staal got Carolina on the board first with a steal-and-snipe combo, but Anthony Beauvillier clapped back for Washington after a wonky bounce behind the net. Logan Thompson and Freddie Andersen both had 18 saves, but Carolina just wanted it more. Next up? They’ll face either Toronto or Florida, who are still throwing punches in their own little brawl. And well, the next game had a few promises from the NHL, but well, looks like they won’t be coming in use now.

What’s your perspective on:

Did the Hurricanes' win save the night for Stars and Jets fans, or just delay the inevitable?

Have an interesting take?

Carolina Hurricanes’ next game had a bigger reason!

Man, if the Caps had somehow pulled off that W, we’d all be gearing up for a juicy Game 6 showdown on Saturday, but nah, the Hurricanes came storming through and straight-up slammed the door on that dream. Washington’s hopes? Crushed like an empty soda can. The official Caps account even hopped on X to share the heartbreak, Carolina skated outta there with a 3-1 win and sent Ovi and the boys packing from this year’s Stanley Cup hunt. It stung badly, especially since fans were crossing their fingers for a big comeback push after being down in the series.

And just like that, Game 6? Gone. Down the drain before it even had a chance to hit the ice. But if, and that’s a big IF, it actually happened, it could’ve been a banger in terms of eyeballs and buzz. On May 15, Walt Ruff shared, “The NHL has announced that if necessary, Game 6 between the #Canes and Capitals on Saturday, May 17, at Lenovo Center will start at 8 p.m. ET. The game would be available to watch on ABC and ESPN+ in the U.S.” Prime time slot, prime-time vibes, basically a goldmine for viewership. But yeah… guess we’ll just have to save that popcorn for another night.
