Wow, the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs Round 2 series between the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs is really heating up! Game 1 was super intense, right? Well, Game 2 kept that same energy going! The Scotiabank Arena was buzzing as the home team took down the Panthers 4-3. The NHL game was quite the back-and-forth showdown, with the Panthers managing to tie things up at 3-3 early in the third period. But guess what? Mitch Marner came through just 17 seconds later, netting the crucial goal that put Toronto in the lead.
Max Pacioretty and Max Domi both chipped in with a goal and an assist, and William Nylander got on the scoreboard too for the Maple Leafs. So, Toronto’s up 2-0 in the series, and there’s this cool stat that just came out about the team. It really gives them a big advantage over Florida.
On X, Sportsnet Stats revealed, stating that the “Leafs are 11-0 all-time in best-of-7 series when taking a 2-0 lead on home ice.” Pretty impressive, right (hope you’re taking notes, Florida Panthers)? Basically, whenever the Maple Leafs kick off a series by winning Games 1 and 2 at home, they’ve always managed to hold onto that lead and never lost the series afterward.

In the past, when they’ve managed to get that early edge at home, it usually means good things for their playoff journey. It’s a pretty solid trend! Got any examples? So, if you check out the Maple Leafs’ Round 1 matchup against the Ottawa Senators, you’ll see they had a pretty similar run. So, the first two matches at Scotiabank Arena ended with Toronto coming out on top!

In a similar way, the Maple Leafs grabbed a win at Canadian Tire Centre in Game 3. So, in Games 4 and 5, they ended up losing to the Senators. But then, in Game 6, the Maple Leafs really turned things around and decided they were heading to Round 2 to take on the Florida Panthers after beating the Senators and wrapping up the series 4-2. With them having an edge now over Florida, you can bet the Panthers are already feeling that pressure.
Brad Marchand gets honest following Florida Panthers defeat
In Round 2, Game 2, Brad Marchand found the back of the net for the Panthers against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored just 15 seconds into the second period, giving the Florida Panthers a lead. But that didn’t last long, as William Nylander quickly tied it up for Toronto. Then, with just three minutes left in the second period, Max Domi put the Maple Leafs ahead with their third goal.

What’s your perspective on:
Can the Panthers break Toronto's 11-0 streak, or is history set to repeat itself?
Have an interesting take?
After the close loss, Marchand opened up about it, saying, “You know, their biggest threat is they’re very good on the rush. I mean, you’ve got to be above them. It seemed like every time we gave them the opportunity to get above us, they created something or capitalized on it. It doesn’t take much for them to score, you know. So we just have to make sure that we’re pretty much perfect out there on our defensive coverage.” Marchand’s take on the Maple Leafs really highlights just how dangerous they can be when they’re on the attack in transition.
What he’s saying is that the Maple Leafs really know how to create scoring chances when they quickly move the puck up the ice after a turnover or a defensive stop. The Florida Panthers forward pointed out that it doesn’t take much for Toronto to find the back of the net. With speedy and talented forwards like Mitch Marner and William Nylander, even a tiny defensive slip can lead to a quick goal. We’ll just have to wait and see if Florida can make a comeback in Game 3.
