The Leafs vs. Panthers Game 3 had everything. Chaos, big hits, and dramatic goals that saw Florida close the gap to 2-1 in this seven-game series. Yet, if you think the drama ended after Brad Marchand once again scored a game-winning playoff overtime goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs, you’d be wrong. That’s because after the exhilarating match, an apparent Leafs fan got a tad bit melodramatic on the way out of the venue.
TSN subsidiary BarDown got hold of a hilarious clip filmed by a fan at the Scotiabank Arena. “Yo where did this guy even come from?” the original poster wrote in the closed captions while filming a man who was only disguised as a Leafs fan. That’s because, as the Maple Leafs fans were leaving in droves, the man ripped off his Leafs jersey in the middle of the crowd. And what does he have underneath? A Florida Panthers jersey, of course.
If that wasn’t sensational enough, a specific name on the back of the jersey only made things worse. You’d be spot on if you guessed that the name was Brad Marchand. And while the crowd may have taken a moment to realize what they just saw, the response was deafening. The clip ended with an intensifying chorus of boos from Toronto maple Leafs fans raining down on the man who he walked away unperturbed.

The reaction isn’t the least bit surprising, but it may not be for the reason you think. While seeing an apparent Leafs fan pull a stunt like that will obviously draw a lot of boos, but it is not just because the Panthers beat them. After all, the Leafs still have the series lead and may have even won if it wasn’t for Sergei Bobrovsky pulling off some huge saves during overtime.

No. Brad Marchand’s name on the jersey bothered the fans even more. Why? Well, the former Boston Bruins captain has been a thorn in the Leafs’ playoff dreams. With tonight’s winning goal, Marchand scored his 5th career game-winning playoff goal against the Leafs, putting him 5th on the list of players who’ve done the same against a particular team. Yet, somehow, Game 3 saw even more drama unfold.

The moment when Toronto Maple Leafs fans held their breath
The Maple Leafs started strong, or as Brad Marchand put it, “they came out extremely hard,” and took the lead early. In fact, the scoreline already read 3-1 by the second period. However, the goal that closed the gap came with its own share of drama. With just under 16:00 left in the second period, Aaron Ekblad moved up to pass the puck to Evan Rodrigues, who then passed to Sam Reinhart.

Rodriguez couldn’t get a shot at the goal owing to the three-on-one situation in favor of the Leafs. However, the Leafs’ defense couldn’t get the puck away either, and in a scramble to get the puck, goalie Joseph Woll, these two teammates, and Reinhart piled up on one another. While it looked like the Toronto Maple Leafs had done enough, the officials went for the review.

For a few agonizing minutes, the Leafs’ fans held their breath as they waited for the results to come in. Unfortunately for the Blue Brigade, that review showed that Sam Reinhart managed to wedge his stick in between the bodies just enough to put the puck beyond the line. “After reviewing the play, the puck completely crosses the goal line,” the officials announced to the dismay of the Leafs’ fans.

“We have a goal,” the referee added as the Panthers’ fans erupted in cheers. The NHL also officially credited Sam Reinhart with the goal and Evan Rodrigues with the assist. That goal was the catalyst that sparked two more goals from the Panthers, who found themselves ahead after the second period. But the Toronto Maple Leafs weren’t going down so easily and equalized in the third period, which led to OT and the decisive Brad Marchand goal.
