SEG kicked off a multi-phase overhaul to make the 1991-built arena a state-of-the-art venue. The star of the show? The Delta Centre, where cheering for the Utah Hockey Club or the Utah Jazz, and every seat feels like it’s courtside or rinkside. That’s the vision the Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) is bringing to life with a massive renovation project to transform the Delta Center into a dual-sport masterpiece for both NHL and basketball fans. Plus, they may have given the public a hint as to what their NHL team’s official name will be.

A first-of-its-kind retractable seating system that tackles the tricky 12-foot elevation difference between the hockey rink and basketball court end-lines. For hockey, this means every lower bowl seat will have a clear view of the ice by the 2025-26 season, fixing 1,000 obstructed seats and adding 400 new ones. For basketball, the system includes 29 rows of retractable seats stretching 28 feet from the Level 3 concourse to the baseline, keeping Jazz fans practically on top of the action with the arena’s signature steep slope. President of Hockey Operations, Chris Armstrong, provided some key updates regarding the team name and plans to renovate the arena. He could not provide much information on when the name is going to be announced, but did mention it should be in the near future.

Utah Hockey Club reporter Belle Fraser shared her excitement on X. She wrote, “Visual of the new Delta Center riser system. Every seat in the lower bowl will have a complete view of the ice at start of the 2025-26 season. When all renovations are done, NHL seating capacity increases from 11,131 to 17,000. NBA increases from 18,206 to 19,000.” That’s a serious capacity boost—17,000 for hockey and 19,000 for basketball—thanks to added seating behind the goals and around event tunnels.

Beyond seating, SEG is sprucing up the fan experience with new premium spaces on Level 1, a 12 per cent increase in restroom capacity, and four new dehumidifiers to keep the ice pristine. A 450-stall parking structure is also in the works. Looking further ahead, plans include a new east-facing main entrance and plaza, redesigned concourses, and remodeled upper bowl seating for better sightlines, all set to roll out over the next three summers.

This project, the most extensive in the Delta Center’s history, promises to redefine the game-day experience. Whether you’re chanting for a Jazz dunk or a Utah Hockey goal, the revamped Delta Center is gearing up to bring you closer to the action than ever before. But what about the team’s name?

Suggestions pour in as Utah Hockey Club searches for a new name

The Utah Hockey Club, born this past offseason, has used its fanbase as it narrows down a permanent name. From an initial pool that included the Utah Wasatch, fans have selected three finalists: Utah Mammoth, Utah Outlaws, and Utah Hockey Club. The Wasatch option, inspired by Utah’s iconic mountain range, was replaced by the Outlaws, reflecting a fan-driven pivot. Another fan favorite, Utah Yetis, was sidelined after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected its trademark due to conflicts with existing “yeti” brands.

A potential clue emerged when the team’s YouTube handle briefly changed to @UtahMammoth, sparking speculation across X. The leak prompted the swift deletion of the club’s YouTube channel, leaving fans buzzing. SEG executive Mike Maughan addressed the incident, stating, “Progress continues on exploring all three name options chosen by our fans. We are fully on track to announce a permanent name and identity ahead of the 2025-26 season.” His response neither confirmed nor denied the Mammoth hint, keeping all options open.

Fan involvement has been central to the process. From January 29 to February 4, voting stations at Delta Arena allowed fans to weigh in on the finalists. Draft logos for the three names surfaced on social media near the voting period’s end, though these are believed to be preliminary and not final designs. This transparent approach underscores SEG’s commitment to a fan-centric naming process.

As the Utah Hockey Club builds its identity, the anticipation grows. Will it embody the rugged strength of the Mammoth, the rebellious spirit of the Outlaws, or the straightforward pride of the Hockey Club? With a decision slated for the 2025-26 season, the hockey community eagerly awaits a name that will define Utah’s NHL legacy.
