Oscar Winner, Who Once Strived for Olympic Glory, Sends a Heartfelt Message to Sporting World After Joining IOC

A prolific Oscar-winning actress who has mesmerized Hollywood for decades on end with her scintillating performances made revelations recently that have fans pleasantly surprised. This actress has displayed her acting range from blockbuster movies like ‘Everything, Everywhere, All at Once’ to ‘Wing Chun’, ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’, etc, and so on and so forth. Now branching out and joining the IOC (International Olympic Committee), she piqued the interest of her fans worldwide with some eye-opening personal revelations.

Considering her standing and stature, it is no surprise that she has made her presence known in the IOC. But there’s more to the story than meets the eye. She spoke to Olympics.com about her aspirations and goals as a member of the IOC during her now eight-year stint, creating sensational headlines.

Michelle Yeoh herself proclaims that she is – “humbled and thrilled” that she holds now a venerable position in the International Olympic Committee. The grand unveiling of the members took place in the heart of Mumbai on the 17th of October 2023. What knocks the uninitiated from the loop is that she is also the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP )Ambassador. Speaking to Olympics.com –“Over the years that I’ve been working with UNDP, I realize the importance and the platform of what a family like this would bring… would help me with the causes or the work that I would like to do, “ she said.

The actress was also very vocal about her affiliation with refugees and minorities and feels that she now has an active stake in supporting them through her role in the IOC.  Her sojourn from harboring dreams of becoming an Olympian to a movie star was really enlightening, to say the least.

With a solid grounding in martial arts, she was heavily interested in sports from a young age. Having mastered squash, swimming, track and field, and springboard diving, she was firing on all cylinders to become a future Olympian. But life had other things planned for the Hong Kong-based actress. That discipline she acquired through sports makes her a solid behemoth of an actress she is today and she credits her success to it.

Actress and sports extraordinaire tackling insurmountable challenges with ease

She, downplaying her strengths, felt that she couldn’t make it as an Olympian and hence began pursuing acting where she found brilliant success. She eventually moved to England where she got hooked on dance and a whole range of other physically demanding sports. This started to show in her acting life as well. She was ecstatic to learn that squash will now be considered an official entryway into the LA 2028 Olympics.

The Oscar winner jocularly remarked saying, “I think people are going to think it’s me who did it… no, but I’ll take credit! No, it’s something that has been very dear to me, especially from Malaysia, Tunku Imran who was the squash federation president. And that they have been trying forever to get squash into the Olympics. I was so thrilled when they announced that for LA28, squash will be included.”

Her journey from sportswoman to Academy Award-winning actress has been nothing short of spectacular.
